Alerts for: North Vancouver Island

Statements

2:54 PM PDT Saturday 09 September 2017
Special air quality statement in effect for:
  • North Vancouver Island
Smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility. Smoke is expected or occurring.

A Smoky Skies Bulletin has been issued for all of Vancouver Island, including the Southern Gulf Islands. This bulletin has been issued by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy in collaboration with Island Health because of forest fire smoke that is covering the area. Smoke concentrations
will vary widely as winds, fire behaviour and temperatures change.

Should symptoms develop (such as an irritated throat or cough) individuals may wish to consider limiting their activity and exposure.

This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

People with lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, can be particularly sensitive to air pollution. They will generally experience more serious health effects at lower levels. Pollution can aggravate their diseases, leading to increased medication use, doctor and emergency room visits, and hospital visits.

Be air aware! Check your local weather forecasts and alerts so you know when to take extra care.

For more information on current air quality, see: www.bcairquality.ca.

Visit www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHI values.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

Alerts for: Metro Vancouver

Statements

6:28 AM PDT Friday 08 September 2017
Special air quality statement in effect for:
  • Metro Vancouver NE
  • Metro Vancouver NW
  • Metro Vancouver SE
  • Metro Vancouver SW
Smoke is causing poor air quality and reducing visibility. Smoke is expected or occurring.

CONTINUED AIR QUALITY ADVISORY

Metro Vancouver is continuing an Air Quality Advisory for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley because of high concentrations of fine particulate matter. The persistent weather pattern over the Pacific Northwest has transported smoke into the region from wildfires burning in Washington State and the BC Interior.

Smoke concentrations may vary widely across the region as winds and temperatures change, and as wildfire behaviour changes.

Fine particulate matter, also known as PM2.5, refers to airborne solid or liquid droplets with a diameter of 2.5 micrometres or less. PM2.5 can easily penetrate indoors because of their small size.

This advisory is expected to continue until there is a change in the current weather.

Metro Vancouver works in cooperation with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Fraser Valley Regional District and B.C. Ministry of Environment to look after air quality.
Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

Special weather statement in effect for:
  • City of Vancouver - including Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver - southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver - southwest including Richmond and Delta
  • North Shore - including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
Hot long weekend...

An unseasonably strong ridge of high pressure will continue to build over British Columbia tonight and Monday. Daytime temperatures, which peaked above 30 degrees today over inland areas, will likely climb another degree or two on Monday.

Under this weather pattern, the airmass will also become increasingly stagnant. Combined with developing outflow winds, wildfire smoke is expected to make its way out to the coast again, beginning overnight or on Monday.

The concentration and location of wildfire smoke will be a wildcard factor for forecasting temperatures and may determine whether records are broken. Smoke blocks the transmission of sunlight and can significantly lower daytime highs.

Computer weather models continue to indicate that the ridge will be quite persistent with the hot weather lasting until at least Wednesday.
